About Me:

My name is Courtney and I blog over at All Things Unpredictable & Chic! My blog focuses on affordable fashion and encourages women to express their own personal style. I also love sharing DIY projects, new recipes, modest fashion trends, and my newlywed adventures living and working in downtown Salt Lake City!

What is hope and what do you hope for?

Hope is what fills my life with happiness. Hope is often misunderstood and hints at uncertainty. I believe it is a gift of the Spirit allowing us to look forward to the things ahead. I hope for a happy life! One filled with happiness, laughter, and memories with the ones I love. I want to have a life I can look back at with no regrets and fill contentment with the things I have done here on Earth.

 

How I live my faith:

I live my faith through service. It is important to look for opportunities to serve others, to give the benefit of the doubt to someone in need, to look for ways to comfort others when they are in difficult times. When you love someone and prayerfully seek ways to help them, your service speaks more than your words.

I Am a Mormon Monday: Meet Sarah

About me:

Hi! I am Sarah Kolar. I live in Utah County, Utah. I love where I live. I love the mountains, the diversity of people, & the fact that there is so much to do here. I love running, although you wouldn't know it with how slow I am and the fact that I would rather eat a cookie ;). I have been married for 6 yrs to my husband, Shawn. I am a full-time mom to 2 beautiful kids, Charlotte, 1 1/2yrs, and Ryan, 6 weeks. I also work full time as a dental hygienist in Salt Lake City, I love everything about my job. It's hard to work and be a mom & wife, but it's well worth it. 

Why am I Mormon?

I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints because after deep and humble prayer in many situations in my life, The Holy Ghost has born witness to me that what I have studied, read (The Bible, The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine & Covenants, & The Pearl of Great Price) is true and that the principles of which I live by are true. Some of these situations are: dealing with death of a non-member grandparent, reading and finishing The Book of Mormon, miracles of watching a nephew be healed, etc. I can't imagine not having the knowledge that I have about this life and not being LDS. 

What is hope? And what do I hope for?

My favorite definition of hope is from a book called, "I Hope You Dance", by Mark D. Sanders & Tia Sillers. It's a beautiful book. It says, " What is hope? To want? To desire? To expect that what's envisioned may indeed happen? YES to all the above. Is hope that gun feeling that it's worth holding out and hanging on just a little longer? ABSOLUTELY. Is hope the core of the human condition? CERTAINLY. Can you have hope without faith and humility and wonder? THAT'S TOUGH. Just the thought that there's something bigger, something truer, something totally surprising out there waiting for us is... priceless. What would you be without hope growing deep in your bones, thriving in every inch of you? NOTHING. What does it take to hope? Hope takes never ceasing to be amazed...wearing your soul on your sleeve... Holding your breath, waiting to hear "I love you, too..." Believe that tomorrow could be better than today... that you'll get a second chance... that you'll make a difference... that you matter." 

I hope for the good things in this world. That people are better than they seem. That my life, through the way I am living, will influence someone else for good. 

How do I live my faith?

I live my faith by befriending and serving individuals as much as I can. I want people that know me to want to get to know the Savior better. Through prayer and listening to the spirit, I try to be guided in who I can help by just listening, offering advice, serving them, or letting them know that they are important. Through my job as a hygienist and a mom, I have these opportunities everyday. I love when President Ezra Taft Benson said, Those who love the Savior " Not only would...die for him, but more importantly they want to live for him."

BREAK ME OFF A PIECE OF THAT KIT-KAT BAR!

Gimme a break! Gimme a break! Break me off a piece of that Kit-Kat bar!
The other day I was uploading some images onto my laptop of...lets just called her "E" from now on okay?  I was uploading some images of E. As I was putting all the pictures into the folder, I came across these pictures I took awhile back when I taught a lesson "I Can Prepare For Baptism" in Primary. I made these for the kids in my class and got the idea HERE. I thought it would be a great reminder for them and I know that they all love chocolate..who doesn't right!?!? I love having the opportunity to teach them. They have such a strong desire to learn about God and Jesus Christ. They make me want to be better. They are such an example to me and I love each and every single one of them dearly.

I'm Alexa from Written in The Midst! I’m a 20 year old life wanderer who loves to write about my random occurrences of life and little happenings. I'm a still trying to find my place in this big ‘ole world, but I love the adventure of it! I love all things random and crazy. What is hope, and what do you hope for?

To me, hope is an incandescent feeling of the soul. A feeling of trust, courage, desire, and a longing for everlasting happiness; anticipating for good through faith. I love the way Elder Steven E. Snow describes it as "an emotion which brings richness to our everyday lives." Our hearts are always full of hope, and I think that's a beautiful thing. When we hope, we begin a journey into a lifetime of good works. I hope for success, adventure, and meaning; for a future filled with love, opportunities to serve and to learn, and for others to experience the greatest happiness. Along with all the silly things like hoping to one day travel the world and ride in a hot air balloon ;)

How do I live my faith?

I live my faith through love. I consider my huge heart a gift, and I strive to use it in any possible way I can. I believe that love can change the world, and I like to think that I'm helping the world through open arms. I want people around me to feel the love that our sweet Savior has for them, and we can help them feel that by loving. I try to set an example in the way I talk, dress, and act, and hope that it affects somebody in some way. I'm not afraid to stand up for my beliefs and to share them with others. I look for the positive in all things, because I know that trials are blessings, and I strive to help people see that. I am extremely grateful for this church and have the deepest love for the gospel and my sweet Savior! I can’t even begin to imagine my life without it.

About Me

I grew up as an Indian-Southern girl in the Heart of Dixie, Mobile, AL.  Yes, I had an accent (I often got strange looks...y'all doesn't usually correspond with dark skin), which I promptly lost after my dad's job took our family to Salt Lake City, UT when I was 16.  Of course, I had all kinds of teen angst about moving in the middle of high school ("but my friendsssss!") but ended up loving the city, my new school, and my wonderful new friends who were willing to include a newbie.

My senior year, I was an editor on our school's yearbook.  My sister went to the same school that year (so fun), so I drove her home and came back to work on a deadline.  I came back out to my car that night to find a sweet little note accompanied by a Kit-Kat bar from a new friend.  It was so thoughtful and jump started a little letter-writing friendship.

One day, as we were driving in front of the Salt Lake Mormon temple, I asked this friend about the statue on top.  He explained to me a bit about the angel Moroni and how he had delivered what would eventually be translated as the Book of Mormon to the first prophet of this dispensation, Joseph Smith.  Thus began many discussions about religion, which led to me eventually reading the Book of Mormon.  I was baptized a few months later.

Both that friend and I independently decided to attend college in Philadelphia.  I still adore that city maybe more than any other (oh, Sabrina's and Delancey Street and the Italian Market and Reading Terminal...I could go on but is it sad that 3/4 of the ones that immediately come to mind have to do with food?).  After graduating, I worked for General Mills, also in Philly.  Oh, and that one friend?  I married him. :)  We got married in the Washington DC Temple and also had an Indian ceremony as well as our reception at Mount Vernon.  The next year, after going on a 2-month traveling extravaganza to 4 continents and 14 countries, we moved to Washington, DC for my husband to start a job and for me to start a graduate program.

In my second year of school, our first baby, Nat (short for Nathanael) arrived on the scene and it was basically the best thing ever.  He's now almost 2 and is sweet, chatty, smart, and hilarious.  While hanging out (or wrangling, whatever...) at home with him, I do some very part-time marketing consulting in the field of public education, which I totally love.  Then three weeks ago, baby #2, Carina, made us a family of four.  She's an angel.

Oh, and some hobbies - I play the violin and sing, love to read, am an avid home cook (and a vegetarian), and am a pro at wasting lots of time on the Interwebs.  And, of course, I love putting together outfits!  Or at least make the effort so I don't feel like a total blob. 

What is hope and what do you hope for? 

I suppose to me, hope is a sort of desire, or something you wish will happen, but that you have a pretty good idea will if you're doing what you can.  It's not just something over which you have no control.  Which, to my semi-control-freakish self, is a relief.  I guess that's why, for me, it ties so closely to faith - it's not just an expectation of something totally off the wall or for which there's no precedent.  I have faith because I have felt and seen things that justify it.  To me, faith isn't blind - it's evidence-based, but just not the kind of evidence we're used to using in labs.  It's evidence of the heart and mind.  Hope is an extension of that and leads to expectation and desire built on faith.

The biggest thing I hope for, without question, is to always be with my family.  I was always super close to my family growing up, and, of course, that familial love is only magnified with two little kiddos now.  I'm grateful for the opportunity to make that happen.


How I live my faith

Whoo boy...that's a toughie.  Although I'm far from perfect at it, I try to live my faith through service, especially in my family.  I'm super lucky that my parents and sister both now live in the same city as we do, so that obviously presents opportunities for service (although if we're being strictly honest, they serve me far more than I do them).  But I think that as we at least open our minds to opportunities to serve, that's the best way to truly show the Savior's selfless love.

I Am A Mormon Monday: Meet Jamie

   I am a wife and mother of 4, a bi-weekly runner, an amateur photographer and an evolving chef. Pretty much your average stay at home mom, but blessed to be living a pretty unaverage life. I am a Mormon!   Hello, my name is Jamie and we have uprooted our family and left the comforts of our Arizona home to experience life in a different country. We are learning how to line dry clothes, how to cook from scratch, how to convert to the metric system, how to eat seafood, how to do the haka dance and how to drive on the other side of the road. We are loving the simple life, the unbelievable beauty, the laid back island lifestyle and the wonderful people.  We are missing friends and family, Target, inexpensive food, warm weather and a fat smothered bean and cheese burrito. Feel free to follow along on our adventures!
  What is hope and what do you hope for?
Hope is being optimistic. It is a belief that good lies in the future, that dark clouds really do have silver linings and that each new day brings a new beginning. My hope is for my children and their future, that they will live to their full potential and stay close to the Savior so that they can experience true joy throughout their lives.
  How do you live your faith?
I try to live my faith through my example.  Not many people are familiar with the LDS church here so we have had so many wonderful missionary opportunities. People can tell we live a different lifestyle and it's an incredible experience to be able to share our secret to joy and happiness with others.

Real charity is not something you give away; it is something that you acquire and make a part of yourself....the greatest charity comes when we are kind to each other, when we don't judge or categorize someone else, when we simply give each other the benefit of the doubt or remain quiet. 

Charity is accepting someone's differences, weaknesses, and shortcomings; having patience with someone who has let us down; or resisting the impulse to become offended when someone doesn't handle something the way we might have hoped. Charity is refusing to take advantage of another's weakness and being willing to forgive someone who has hurt us. Charity is the pure love of Christ.

So today....show someone else a little love!!

About Me:

 I grew up in Las Vegas, which always seems to strike people as funny when they find out I'm Mormon, and then went to BYU, where I got married and also graduated with a degree in history. My husband and I moved to Austin, Texas, where we both worked for a while before returning to school (he got a masters in accounting, I got one in library and information studies). We lived in Boston for one year where I was an elementary school librarian, but after we had our first daughter, we moved back to Texas. Now I stay home with our two little girls, where I do a lot of writing and blogging, and keep the dishwasher full with my constant cooking experiments. My library card is always maxed out.

What is hope and what do you hope for?

Hope is faith in things that haven't yet happened or are still a work in progress. I hope for my girls to grow up to be happy, smart, strong, and faithful. I hope for a life where I can continue to grow and learn, spiritually and mentally. I hope for my marriage to keep getting stronger and better and more fulfilling. I hope for a testimony that doesn't waver and is strong enough to hold onto when things are tough.

How do you live your faith?

I feel like being a mother gives me the opportunity to live my faith on a daily basis because my girls are watching my every move. I want them to see that I really do value the things I tell them I value (prayer, family, scripture study, my relationships with my Heavenly Father and Savior). Having two little shadows around makes it pretty clear when I'm not living up to the standards I want to be. Truly, though, I feel like the clearest reflection of how I'm living my faith is what I see in my own heart. I can do all the outward things - attend church, have Family Home Evening, do my visiting teaching - and still look inside myself and know if I'm actively living my faith or if I'm just playing out my responsibilities. I want to live my faith completely, inside and out.
