Organizing Your Closet For Summer

With the onset of warmer weather comes the green light to wear your summer attire. Flowing dresses, bright colors, broad brimmed sun hats, shorts and sandals are just the beginning. Summertime offers an entire new wardrobe of possibilities for your look, giving you a chance to let your personality shine without having to cover it up with a big coat. As you prepare your closet for the summer, this is also a great time to take inventory and do a little organizing. Keep these suggestions in mind as you go through all of your clothes and accessories this season.

Step 1: Remove Everything (Yes, everything!)

The best way to do a thorough organizing job is to remove everything from your closet and start fresh. This will allow you the opportunity to analyze every article of clothing or accessory you own. We often forget about items we have not worn in a long time or that have simply been hiding out behind other pieces. This is also a great time to clean your closet before replacing anything. Wipe everything down, replace shelf paper (or add it) and vacuum it out, using an attachment to reach the small spaces. Now you are ready to organize.

Step 2: Get Rid of Winter Items

Winter clothes can take up quite a bit of space, so separate your winter clothing out from everything else. You can then choose to either store all of it away or take the time to sort it now and remove pieces you never wear or that no longer fit.

Since you won’t need your winter coats for a few months, take them to the dry cleaners and then put them away for the summer. You can also use this opportunity to get them waterproofed again so they will be ready for next winter.

You are going to need some storage space, so put your winter clothes away in bins, drawers, or unused closets. Look for spaces that are currently unused (such as under the bed) where you can store these warmer clothing items.

Step 3: Sort the Remaining Items

Now that you are left solely with summer clothing and accessories, it is now time to sort these into categories: keep, maybe keep, discard. The “keep” you can place back into the closet and the “maybe keep” items get to have a second look. Since it is summertime now, you can be a little more lenient on these items if you have a new look you want to try or had just forgotten about the item. Try this trick to make sure you actually end up wearing these items: First, you can put the “maybe keep” clothes in with the hangers facing the wrong direction. Once you wear the clothes, put them back facing the correct direction. If you make it to fall and have hangers still facing the wrong way, you went the whole summer without wearing that clothing item and can give it away with little to no regret.

The “discard” needs to leave you. From clothing swaps with friends, to donating, to hosting a garage sale, there are many ways you can give these items another chance with someone else. If you choose to have a garage sale, you might even consider teaming up with friends or neighbors to get more traffic, as suggested in these awesome tips.

Step 4: Put the Items Back in an Organized Manner

Once you have completed the sorting, you can put your clothes and accessories back in their rightful place. Hanging clothes should be limited to blouses, pants, and dresses. T-shirts can be folded and put on shelves or in drawers to give you more space. If you do not have a system already in place for how to organize your clothes, here are two main ways to approach this:

  • Like with Like: Organize your clothing by keeping all items that are the same together. For example, all short sleeved tops together, all casual dresses together, etc.
  • By Color: Some enjoy organizing their clothes by color. This might be helpful on days when you are going for a certain look and just need that missing piece that matches your incomplete ensemble.

You can even go as far as making sure all of your hangers are the same color to add even more fluidity to your closet.

Step 5: Find a Home for Accessories

Finally, it is time to put accessories in their own place as well. Hats can be hung from pegs on the backs of doors or on walls, to save on closet space. Belts, ties, and scarves can also be hung vertically.

Bags come in handy during the summer as you go to picnics, beach parties, or weekend getaways. But they also take up a lot of room. Try storing smaller bags within larger bags to save on space.

Buy shoe organizers to make sure the floor of your closet stays free from clutter. There are organizers that hang over doors, can be hooked onto the clothing rod, or even add shelves above the floor. Keep baskets for inexpensive, rubber sandals you wear often.

These tips can be tweaked to fit your personal organization style and reused for other seasons. Come fall, you will be ready to tackle your closet once again, as you have become an organization master!

FASHION FRIDAY LINK UP: STRIPES & SOME INSPIRATION

Happy Friday guys!! I don't know about you, but I am ready for the weekend!

I had so much fun shooting these pictures! At first I was just taking some pictures
next to the fountain and then I said " hey why not take some playful pictures IN
fountain?!?!?" So I did!! This outfit post has been sitting as a "draft" for about a
week now. I was pondering on what I wanted to write about, and then this lovely
scripture came to my mind.

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the
water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
-John 4:14

The Savior spent His earthly ministry in a time and place where people relied on wells for water. As He taught the woman at the well by saying that “whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst” (John 4:14), was He also teaching us that His gospel quenches—permanently—our most basic needs? I believe so.

Elder Joesph B. Wirthlin told this story about drinking deeply of the living waters....

My employment takes me to communities all over the world where people do not have access to clean water. Our group works with local governments and residents to provide maintainable sources of pure, life-sustaining water such as wells and spring or rain captures.

These water projects offer a significant improvement in the quality of life. Health drastically improves because clean water stops the contraction of typhoid, cholera, and other water-borne diseases. The economy also improves because parents and children who previously spent their time carrying water can now pursue employment and education. Even in communities with numerous and wide-ranging problems, people always say that clean water is what they would like most.

I will always be grateful to a woman in Kenya, Africa, who taught me about willingness to work to obtain water. I met her at a celebration following the installation of a well in her community. With gratitude she told me that the new well would cut her daily nine-mile (14 km) trip to get water to a one-mile (1.6 km) trip. She was overjoyed at the opportunities that would now be hers.

I couldn't help but think how I would feel if I had to walk a mile to get water. I was impressed that she put everything—from housework to gardening—aside while she made her journey to fetch water. She knew she couldn't complete the other tasks without that water. I thought about how heavy her burden was. Carrying water takes strength and endurance. Yet, for the sake of her family, she was willing to walk nine miles every day to get it.

..............................................................................................................................................................

I love this story so much. I really don't think most of us know just how incredibly lucky and blessed we are. I cannot imagine walking a mile or even less to get water for me and my family!! Crazy!!

I wonder for all of us who get clean water from taps in our homes sometimes expect to come unto Christ with the same ease as turning a knob to get a glass of water. Or are we willing to put aside other tasks, even important ones, to seek to know Jesus Christ and His Father?

I know with all my heart that the well of living water the Savior offers us never runs dry and is pure and life sustaining. When we come to Him with an empty cup, He will fill it, often beyond our capacity to receive. He is truly living water, a manifestation of the love of God.

I AM A SUCKER FOR ANYTHING VINTAGE

Sunglasses: Jessica Simpson // Necklace: White House Black Market //
Ring: Ross // Bracelets: F21 // Shoes: Bamboo (Ross) // Skirt: Ever + Mi Crush

Have you guys ever heard of Ever + Mi Crush?

Ever +Mi Crush is a vintage infused online woman's clothing store that was started by Christen and her husband Peter. Their online clothing store is a culmination of their love for art, design, music, and fashion.  From the beginning of their relationship, they wanted to put their passion to use, let their personalities shine, and make something of their own that they could pour themselves into.

Ever + Mi Crush is different from other online stores because they strive to sell uniquely designed clothing pieces and handcrafted jewelry. They are also looking to sell prints and artwork soon too!

I was wondering what the meaning behind the name was, but if you mix their loves (crushes) and their two adorable little boys, Everett & Miles together. Ta-da!! You have Ever+Mi Crush!! Get it?!?!

Christen came across my blog and was kind enough to send me this vintage mustard-colored skirt.

When I was browsing through the clothing on their website and saw this skirt I immediately fell in love. For those of you who might know me.... I am a sucker for anything vintage! When I tried on this skirt, it fit me perfect. I really love the detail of the bow at the waistband to give the skirt a dressier look. The material is lightweight, but very well made especially for the price! This is definitely going to be a skirt that I wear all the time! The color is also transitional for spring, summer, fall and winter!

Here are a few of my favorites from their website:
